The Library of the Humboldt-University, founded in 1831, is the oldest University Library in Berlin and owns more than 6 million items in its 12 locations. The UL is the University’s central institution for the supply of scientific literature. Furthermore, it can be used by the general public. The University Art Collection (Kustodie) and the University Archive are part of the University Library as well.

Besides current scientific literature the UL has a large collection of historical and rare items, such as the Grimm Library, a collection of portraits of the university’s professors and a collection of theses.

The historical stock offers valuable sources to the history of science and the publishing history in Berlin. Remarkably, the University Library suffered from a rather small loss of stock during the 2nd World War. Due to the reference copy law many rare items were included into the library’s historical collection until 1970.
