The EOD Network gathered in Ljubljana, Slovenia

On 3-4 June 2019 the EOD (eBooks on Demand) Network gathered to discuss digitization on demand and text recognition. 25 participants from 16 institutions in 10 European countries were kindly hosted by the National and University Library, Ljubljana, Slovenia.

“The conference was an interesting combination of EOD meeting and Transkribus workshop,” said Silvia Gstrein, the coordinator of the EOD network from the University of Innsbruck, Austria. “EOD meeting with the intention to deliver digitisation on demand and Transkribus workshop with the intention to improve text recognition,” Gstrein added.

The National Library of Portugal demonstrated, how to extend the EOD service beyond bound books to high resolution single images. Other updates by the EOD network members included a case study of a digital strategy by the National and University Library of Strasbourg; a complete software solution for in-house digitization by the National and University Library, Ljubljana; and Live-Demonstration of Scan Tent and DocScan App.

In addition, Günter Mühlberger from the University of Innsbruck introduced Transkribus - a platform for the automated recognition, transcription and searching of handwritten and printed historical documents. Mühlberger also ran the hands-on workshop, where the participants had the opportunity to learn how to use Transkribus in order to improve the accessibility of digitised historical materials.
