Books on Demand
You may order books from the holdings of the Vienna City Library to be digitised being in public domain (70 years after the death of the rightholder) and if permited by the condition of the book. Your requested eBook is thoroughly scanned and digitised from cover to cover. You will then receive your digital book in a single PDF file.
- Use your standard software (Adobe Acrobat Reader) to read the eBook on-screen, zoom in to the image or navigate through the book.
- Print single pages or the entire book.
In addition, profit from the advantages of automated full text recognition!
On request, automated full text recognition will be carried out for books with a publishing year after 1801. You will also receive your digital copy in one PDF file, but you can profit from the additional functionalities:
- Use the full text search of individual terms.
- Copy the images and parts of the text to other applications (e.g. word processors).
- Save the recognised text in a separate TXT file which you will be able to edit in any standard word processor.
Price: 10 EUR basic price plus 0.16 EUR / page
Special price for employees at the Vienna City Hall Magistrat: 10 EUR plus 0.12 EUR / page
Please note: Books will solely be scanned from cover to cover. The total price consists of the basic price and the number of scanned images multiplied by the price per single scan. The number of scans may exceed the number of book pages as we will also scan the covers, flyleafs, title pages, table of content, advertisments, etc.
Additional information regarding your order
- We wish to point out that automatic text recognition (OCR) does not fully provide perfect results and inaccuracies can occur especially with older books.

Sale or return
Unfortunately, returning eBooks is not possible, as the products are not suitable for this due to their nature.
