Fondée en 1831, la Bibliothèque de l’Université Humboldt est la plus ancienne bibliothèque de Berlin, responsable jusqu'en 1972 du dépôt légal pour les publications éditées dans le Brandebourg et à Berlin.
Ayant peu souffert des bombardements de la Seconde Guerre mondiale, ses collections historiques portent essentiellement sur les années 1850-1945, et se sont enrichies au fil du temps grâce à l'acquisition de bibliothèques d'érudits : 6 000 ouvrages de la collection Jacob et Wilhelm Grimm, une partie de la bibliothèque philologique Wilhelm von Humboldt, collection Theodor Schmalz, bibliothèque du prince Oscar de Prusse, etc.
Les annexes de la bibliothèque possèdent elles aussi des fonds importants : la bibliothèque de la 'Gesellschaft der Naturforschenden Freunde zu Berlin', fondée en 1773 (1 000 ouvrages), la bibliothèque privée d'Auguste Wilhelm von Hofmann (8 000 ouvrages). Et les annexes consacrées aux humanités offrent d'importantes collections spécialisées en histoire de l'art.

The network of the Humboldt University Library consists of the following constitu-ents to be found at different locations:
* Central library at the Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm Center (with 12 integrated branch libraries)
* Natural sciences branch library at the Erwin Schrödinger Center
* Campus Nord branch library
* 8 further branch libraries
There are a total of approximately 6 million volumes in the holdings of the Library.
