Your requested eBook is carefully scanned using special book scanners. Then the thus produced digital images are merged into a single file in PDF format.
- Use free standard software (e.g. Adobe Acrobat Reader), to read the eBook on-screen, zoom into the images or navigate through the book.
- Print single pages or the entire book.
Benefit from automatic text recognition!
If possible – normally with books, which have appeared after approximately 1850 –, a free of charge process of automatic text recognition is applied after your requested book is scanned. You will again, conveniently, receive your digital book in a single PDF file, but also benefit from additional functionalities:
- Full-text search of individual terms
- Copying of images and parts of the text to other applications (e.g. word processors
- Saving of the entire text as a text file and editing it
Price: 5.00 Euro basic charge and 0.36 Euro per scan
The pricing of the eBooks on Demand (EOD) service of the Bavarian State library is based on the "Entgelte für Vervielfältigungen", which can be viewed under http://www.bsb-muenchen.de/Charges_for_Photographic_Work.1806+M57d0acf4f16.0.html.
Please, note: As a rule, books are scanned completely only. The total price is calculated from the basic charge and the scan number multiplied by the price per scan. The scan number corresponds only approximately to the number of pages of a work, since envelope, title, flyleaves, adverts, etc. are also being scanned by us, but usually not numbered. Therefore, the number of scans usually exceeds the number of pages.
Example: A book contains 96 counted pages and, in addition, an advertising part with 15 pages. Since the book cover, the title page, the table of contents and the preliminaries are also scanned, the total number of scans amounts to 120. In this case, the price will be 48.20 Euro (120 scans @ 0.36 Euro and 5.00 Euro basic charge).
Additional information regarding your order
- We wish to point out that automatic text recognition (OCR) does not fully provide perfect results and inaccuracies can occur especially with older books (about 1850 and before).
- By ordering you accept the Terms and Conditions of the Bavarian State Library.
- The Bavarian State Library reserves itself the right to provide the images made on behalf of users in a reduced quality on the internet. To these pages can be linked with a persistent URL free of charge.

Sale or return
Unfortunately, returning eBooks is not possible, as the products are not suitable for this due to their nature.
- In addition to the digital form, the requested book will be reprinted in classic paperback and shipped right to you.
- Therefore, the scanned images will be additionally processed and printed by a "print on demand" service provider.
